FAQ's
Do I need a special licence or permit to use and insure my minibus?
It depends on what you are using the vehicle for. Private use requires nothing more than the relevant category on your ordinary driver's licence. Some non-profit organisations may need a special permit under section 22 of the 1985 Transport Act. If the vehicle is being used for hire and reward, a permit is required, although requirements vary in different areas. Our experienced insurance advisers can advise you further to ensure you obtain the correct permit in order for you to insure your coach or minibus correctly.
Do you cover minibuses for social, domestic and pleasure use?
Yes, in fact many of our customers with large families find that a minibus is the best vehicle to get everyone to their destination in one journey.
How many seats does a vehicle have to have for it to be classed as a minibus?
Most minibuses will have at least 9 seats including the driver and they can go up to a seating capacity of 17 including the driver. MPV’s normally carry 7 to 8 people including the driver.
What do I need on my driving licence to drive a minibus?
If you had entitlement to drive cars before 1st January 1997 you may drive a minibus provided it has a maximum of 17 seats including the driver’s seat and it is not being used for hire and reward. If your current driving licence doesn’t have the minibus entitlement (category D1) there are certain circumstances where you still may be able to do so – click here for further information. To be able to drive a minibus that has 9 or more passenger seats for hire or reward you will normally need PCV entitlement. This involves taking a further driving test. However, if you will be driving the minibus for an organisation under the minibus or community bus permit scheme you will not need to have the PCV entitlement.
Will my minibus policy cover my passengers for injury cover?
Yes, your policy will insure against liabilities to third parties, which includes the passengers being carried in the vehicle.
Can you cover a minibus being used by a Church?
We offer policies covering many different groups such as churches, charities, education and sports associations.
Can you include breakdown cover?
Yes breakdown cover is available on most policies.
Do you have a policy to cover a coach?
We can cover coaches and buses with up to 52 seats, minibuses with 9 to17 seats and MPV’s with 7 or 8 seats.
