If you are a tattooist, a body piercer or run a body art shop, your local council will request that you have public liability cover before they will allow you to trade. At Coversure we have the relevant experience to help you. We can provide all sorts of cover, not just simple liability policies. Public Liability - We can provide you with Public & Employers' liability cover, although it is often much better value to take out a full package, as it is usually only slightly more expensive, and gives you much more extensive cover.

Treatment Risk - This is available as an add on or by itself, offering cover levels from £100,000 to £1,000,000 worth of cover for a minimum of 3 people, or more if required.

FAQ's

What is Public Liability Insurance?

Public liability insurance provides cover should you cause bodily injury to third parties or material damage to a third party's property. It does not normally cover defective workmanship.

What is Bodily Injury?

Bodily injury is where you cause someone physical harm, for example, you drop a heavy item on someone's foot and injure them.

What is Material Damage?

This is damage caused to someone's physical belongings, for example, a builder drops a tile off a roof onto someone's car and damages it.

What is a Third party?

A third party is someone not directly related to you or your company. In most cases, your customer is a third party.

Why doesn't Public Liability Insurance cover defective workmanship?

It is generally assumed that you are properly qualified and experienced in your particular trade. Therefore, the majority of insurance companies do exclude defective workmanship (efficacy), however are able to include efficacy for certain trades.

What is Treatment Risk insurance?

As public liability does not cover the "item" (or customer) you are working on, if you are a hairdresser, beautician, tattooist/bodyartist or other related trade, you will need cover for the treatments you apply. Treatment risk insurance provides cover in case you cause injury to a person you apply a treatment to.

What is Employers' Liability Insurance?

If you employ anyone, or you are a limited company, it is a legal requirement to have employers' liability insurance to provide cover should an employee be injured or hurt in the course of carrying out their work. The only exceptions to this are if you only employ close, direct relatives, such a brother/sister/son/daughter/father/mother or you have a limited company and you are the only director, with no other employees. Employers' liability is only available as an add-on to an existing public liability insurance.

What is Rejuvi?

Rejuvi is a special tattoo removal paste which is introduced into your skin in the same way as a tattoo, i.e. with an electric needle. There are no lasers involved.

What sorts of body piercing can I have covered?

I. Facial including - cheeks, eyebrows, skin, ears, lips/labret piercing (not through oral labia), lower lip, sides and center, nostrils, thin or hyaline cartilage and tongue.
II. Body, navel, nipples, certain genital piercings such as labial, fourchette, scrotum and Prince Albert (call for full details).
III. Surface piercing, subject to approval but specifically excluding below the ankles and wrists, nape and sides of neck, and the bridge of the nose.

Do you cover mobile tattooists?

Yes, we can cover tattooing away from your premises, such as stalls at festivals, etc., but we do not cover mobile tattoo shops inside vehicles.

Do I need to have Public Liability insurance for my tattoo shop?

If you offer tattooing, semi-permanent skin colouring, cosmetic piercing, or electrolysis you must be registered with your local authority/council, who will require proof of a valid public liability policy being in force.
